Conceptually, the Rick Cane Pro model has its niche at the intersection of the modern thruster and classic fish. It’s an obscure region to explore as a shaper. From here the path can lead virtually anywhere. But it’s precisely here we set out to make some of our funnest, most memorable sleds. 

My chance came along in 2014, when Tanner Gudauskas inquired about making a “twin fin”, leaving me to figure out the rest. How to accommodate a heavy-footed, world-class goofy footer? I wanted to build a  twin for high caliber surfing, while making enough concession to playfulness, especially on small-surf days. The goal was to streamline everything for flow and a skate-like feel . . . the perfect balance of performance and fun. I think the goal was achieved, but Tanner has the final verdict.

Over the years, the RC would get a chance to be put to the test in a range of conditions – all over Hawaii, California and Indonesia, becoming an unexpected candidate to replace high-pro shortboarding. It was pleasing to hear that some people even preferred it to their thruster.

And it can still handle some size – finding a groove at waist-high, and really locking in as the waves get bigger (up to 5 ft Hawaiian, 10 ft mainland). Simultaneously loose and controlled, it features the critical maneuverability you’ll typically sacrifice when riding a more aesthetic “fish”, while keeping the speed and flow. Taking off, you’ll notice how little effort is required to get going fast, allowing you to focus on driving the board somewhere you’ve never been before. 

In 2020, Stab featured the Rick Cane Pro Model in their Electric Acid Surfboard Test with Noa Deane. One year later Aritz Aranburu rode his RK in the Pantin Classic in Spain and placed 2nd.
